WHY CHIROPRACTIC CARE DURING
PREGNANCY?
During this special time, a woman’s body experiences many rapid changes and adaptations.

Specific, gentle chiropractic techniques can assist a woman in detecting and removing any undue stress, particularly in her pelvic bones, muscles and ligaments. If the pelvis is out of balance in any way, these ligaments become torqued and twisted, causing constraint to the uterus. This constraint limits the potential space for the developing baby.
In the last few weeks of gestation, even if the baby is in the desirable head down position, uterine constraint can still affect a baby’s head from moving into the ideal presentation for birthing. The head may be slightly tilted to one side or in a posterior position…..
If the baby’s position is even slightly off during birth it may slow down labour and/or add pain and distress to both the mother and her baby.
Published studies have indicated that chiropractic care during pregnancy reduces labour time and helps the uterus contract in an efficient manner.
Chiropractic care assists a woman to feel more at ease in her body, decreases stress and develops trust and body awareness, so essential for a natural delivery.
Benefits of Regular Chiropractic Care
During Preconception & Pregnancy
· Creates a balanced state within the pelvis by maintaining a mobile pelvis and flexible uterine ligaments
· Prevents/relieves some of the common discomforts experienced during pregnancy (such as back or pelvic discomfort/pain, sciatica, constipation, heartburn…)
· Removes interference to the nervous system allowing your uterus to function at its maximum potential
· Takes the body out of the “fight-flight”/stress response, thus increasing blood flow to the uterus
· Assists in creating an environment that promotes a faster, easier, less painful and safer birth, reducing the need for medical intervention, including caesarean section
Assists in repositioning babies from a breech, transverse or posterior position
The Webster Technique, in use since the 1970’s is a:
“ specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system, facilitates balance in the pelvic and abdominal muscles and ligaments, which in turn reduces constraint to the woman’s
uterus allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birth” ICPA
The Webster Technique involves analysis of the relationship between the bones of the pelvis, and correction of aberrant biomechanics through the use of a light force chiropractic adjustment of the sacrum. It also involves analysis and release of specific uterine ligament tension or spasm. This relieves the musculoskeletal causes of intrauterine constraint that may lead to medical intervention, including cesarean, and has been shown to be 70-90% effective in turning breech babies. At no stage does the chiropractor attempt to physically change the position of the baby.
